Healthy French Toast Substitutions

To make a “healthier” or lighter version of this recipe you could substitute:

  • Whole wheat bread instead of white bread
  • Almond milk instead of milk (Unsweetened Vanilla Almond milk also works well)
  • Powdered sucralose instead of sugar
  • Egg whites instead of whole eggs
  • Sugar-free maple syrup instead of maple syrup

I have tried all of the above substitutions and my family didn’t even notice 🙂

How to make Classic French Toast

The secret to the best classic French Toast ever is in the bread you choose, the egg to milk ratio, and how long you let it soak. I like my French Toast to be dry on the surface with slightly crisp edges.

  1. Preheat skillet or electric griddle.
  2. Break the eggs into a square, bread sized dish – I like to use sandwich sized Gladware.
  3. Add the milk to the eggs and beat together.
  4. Wisk vanilla, sugar and cinnamon to egg and milk mixture.
  5. Grease the pan or griddle with the cooking spray.
  6. Dip a slice of bread into the egg mixture, then flip it to coat the other side. Don’t allow it to sit in the mixture very long, if you do the toast will be soggy.
  7. Place the battered bread on the griddle and cook until it’s lightly golden brown. Sprinkle with more cinnamon if you really like cinnamon like I do 🙂
  8. Flip and cook the other side.
  9. Repeat until you use all the bread.

Common French Toast Mistakes

  1. Soggy French Toast – caused by too much milk, which prevents the egg from cooking.
  2. Cooked Egg Chunks on your French Toast – Make sure to whisk the egg mixture until the milk, eggs, and spices are well combined.
  3. Not Choosing the Right Bread – French toast is like bread pudding. It soaks up the egg mixture for a creamy texture on the inside and a slightly crunchy texture on the outside. If the bread is thin, it will be too flimsy to hold together when dipped in the mixture. I prefer to use a Texas Thickcut Bread that is 3/4″ to 1″ thick.
